Common questions
How do I install ClickType?
Download the latest zip from the releases page, open it, and move ClickType.app to your Applications folder. Open it and its keycap icon appears in the menu bar. ClickType needs macOS 13.0 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon.
How do I update ClickType?
Quit ClickType (right-click its icon › Quit), download the latest release and replace the copy in Applications. If typing stops working after an update, turn ClickType off and on again under Accessibility.
How do I give ClickType permission to type?
Open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security › Accessibility and turn on ClickType. If it’s already on but typing doesn’t work, turn it off and on again, then relaunch ClickType.
I clicked the icon and nothing was typed.
ClickType types into whatever has keyboard focus. Click into the text field first so the cursor is blinking there, then click the ClickType icon in the menu bar. Check that the clipboard holds text: images, files and other non-text items are ignored. Also check that the Accessibility permission above is on.
Some apps or fields don’t receive the text.
ClickType sends the text as simulated keystrokes. Password and other secure fields, and some apps with elevated privileges, reject simulated typing by design. In those cases paste or type the text yourself.
How do I start ClickType at login, or quit it?
Right-click (or Option-click) the ClickType icon in the menu bar. The menu has Run at Login, the Accessibility settings and Quit.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. ClickType reads the clipboard only when you click its icon, types it and keeps no copy. The app makes no network connections. The privacy policy has the details.
How do I remove ClickType and its data?
Quit the app and move it from Applications to the Bin. It keeps no copy of your clipboard, so there’s nothing else to delete. You can also remove it from the Accessibility list in System Settings.
Is ClickType free?
Yes. It’s free and open source under the MIT license. The code is on GitHub, and each release is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple.
